What it holds

Fifteen hundred, standing

The Rankine mill cut hardwood on Magazine Street for sixty years. The saws are gone; the shed stayed: 1,320 square metres of timber trusses and honest concrete, ten minutes from the Cairns CBD.

We light the beams, run tables down the floor, and let the building do the talking.

The Magazine is the other end of the same site. A powder magazine on Magazine Street, est 1901, restored by the Nu Nu/Rankine Collaboration.

It takes 350 standing, or 100 seated. Long tables down the lawn with the festoon up, and a speech nobody has to shout. Weddings, milestone birthdays, launches, a board dinner that would rattle around inside The 65. Same Nu Nu kitchen, same service team, just more intimate.

The heritage

The saws are gone. The shed stayed

The Rankine mill ran on Magazine Street from 1959, cutting, drying and storing hardwood for half of Cairns. The saws are gone; the shed stayed. Its scale, its trusses and its honest industrial character are exactly why it makes such a room.

We don't dress over it. We light the beams, run the tables down the length of the floor, and let the building do the talking. Add a marquee to the yard and the same site holds two thousand.
